Coming from a poverty stricken background, Joseph was a student of primary and high school in Sierra Leone; during high school, he had to work as a janitor in order to pay for his education.

Having finished with his high school education, Boakai attended the College of West Africa, the University of Liberia, and graduated with a degree in business administration in 1972. He then attended Kansas State University on a USAID program and graduated in 1976.

Boakai became a member of the Unity party, and prior to becoming the vice president of Liberia, served on several other political positions. First of all he was the Resident Manager of the Liberia Produce Marketing Corporation from 1973 until 1980, after which he was the Managing Director of the Liberia Produce Marketing Corporation until 1982. His success was rapidly growing when he became the Minister of Agriculture, remaining in that position until 1985 under president Samuel Doe, responsible for forming the national agricultural policy and monitoring activities and boards of several agricultural projects. During 1986, he reviewed and evaluated Green Revolution, Agricultural sector and AMSCO. At the same time he had another important job, being the chairman of West African Rice Development Association, and moreover, Joseph was a consultant to the World Bank in Washington.

Boakai was subsequently elected as the vice president of Liberia alongside Ellen Johnson Sirleaf’s election for president in 2006, taking over the country after many years of civil war. The duo stated that their priority was to restore law and order in Liberia, set a better course and future for their country, and encourage investors to start their projects there. As of mid-2017, Boakai announced that he was running for president, and on July 10 he named Emmanuel Nuquay his running mate. The presidential election is scheduled for 10 October 2017.
